NARRATOR: After I died, I began to surrender the parts of myself that were no longer necessary.

                 My desires, beliefs, ambitions, doubts-every trace of my humanity was discarded.

                 I discovered when moving through eternity, it helps to travel lightly.

                 In fact, I held on to only one thing, my memory.

                제가 죽은 뒤로는 더 이상 불필요한 저의 부분들을 포기하기 시작했습니다. 내 욕망, 신념, 야망, 의심- 모든 인간적인 흔적들은 버려졌죠. 불멸의 내세를 여행하면서 가볍게 움직이는 것이 이롭다는 것을 알게 됐죠. 사실 오직 하나는 버리지 못했습니다, 제 기억이죠.

가족들은 이라크 전쟁에서 죽은 군인들의 기억을 간직하고 있습니다.

 

NARRATOR: It’s astonishing to look back on the world I left behind.

                  I remember it all, every single detail. Like my friend, Bree Van De Kamp.

                 제가 두고 떠난 세상을 돌아 본다는 것은 놀라운 일입니다. 하나하나 다 기억하니까요.

                 제 친구 브리처럼.

*He looked back on[to, over] his school days.

그는 학생 시절을 회상했다.

(Flashback to: MARY ALICE at BREE’s house, talking animatedly as BREE walks in with an easy smile, holding a dish in her hands.)

NARRATOR: I remember the easy confidence of her smile,

               브리의 느긋한 자신감에서 오는 미소를 기억합니다.

(Cut to: BREE standing at the head of the table, where REX, PAUL and MARY ALICE are sitting. They watch as she drizzles some alcohol over a dish, and lights it on fire.)

NARRATOR: the gentle elegance of her hands,

                  그녀의 부드럽고 우아한 손동작,

MARY ALICE: Wow.  .

(Cut to: MARY ALICE and PAUL leaving, as they say their goodbyes at the front door.)

NARRATOR: the refined warmth of her voice.

                 세련된 온기가 느껴지는 목소리.

BREE: Bye. 잘 가요.

NARRATOR: But what I remember most about Bree

                   하지만 가장 기억에 남는 건

BREE: Rex, wasn’t that a lovely(her smile fades as she sees REX walking off, completely ignoring what she’s saying.)  여보, 오늘 정말

NARRATOR:  …was the look of fear in her eyes.

                       두려움의 눈빛이었습니다.

        

(End of flashback. Resume present.)

NARRATOR: Bree had started to realize her world was unravelling,

                 and for a woman who despised loose ends, that was unacceptable.

                브리는 그녀의 세상이 무너지고 있다는 것을 깨닫기 시작했죠. 마무리가 느슨한 건

                참지 못하는 그녀로선 그건 받아 들일 수 없는 일이었습니다.

*lóose énd: 보통 loose ends  (·새끼의) 매듭짓지 않은 끝; 완성 직전에 있는 것

/tie[clear] up (the) loose ends 매듭을 짓다, 마무리하다.

 

(BREE looks at the clock, which reads 5:35am. She gets out of bed, and goes downstairs. We see her wearing a robe, bending over REX, sleeping downstairs on the couch. She shakes him awake.)

BREE: Rex, Rex! You need to get up!

         여보, 여보!  일어나봐!

 

REX: It’s not even light out.  아직 해도 안 떴잖아.

*It means it is very early in the morning and the sun hasn't risen yet, so it is still dark outside.

 

BREE: Please hurry, if the kids see you sleeping down here, they’re gonna start asking questions. (takes REX’s blanket off him.)

        서둘러, 애들이 당신 여기서 자는 거 보면 막 질문을 해댈 거라고.

REX: Let ‘em ask, I don’t care anymore. 질문하라 그래, 난 더 이상 신경 안 써.

BREE: Well, I care. (pulls his pillow out from underneath his head.) They don’t need to be burdened

         with our marital problems, and if we’re working things out, the least we could do is try

         to keep up appearances.

         난 신경 쓰여. 우리 결혼 문제로 아이들까지 부담 가질 필요는 없잖아.

         우리가 문제를 해결하려고 하는 거라면 최소한 좋은 모습은 보이려고 노력해야지.

*to maintain a good front, make things look good even if they're not

REX: (rolls his eyes) Oh yeah, appearances. I keep forgetting about appearances.

                           , 좋은 모습. 그걸 자꾸 깜빡하네.

BREE: Oh Rex, you look so tired.  여보, 피곤해 보여.

REX: Ah, I didn’t sleep. This damn thing is so uncomfortable.

        잠 못 잤어. 빌어먹을 침대가 너무 불편해.

BREE: Well, why don’t you move back upstairs and sleep in our bed?

       위층으로 돌아가서 우리 침대에서 자지 그래?

REX: We’re in marriage counselling, Bree, I think that would confuse things.

         우린 지금 결혼 상담 중이야, 이러면 혼란스러워.

BREE: It’s just I miss you. 그냥….당신이 그리워서 그래.

REX: I know you do. Of course, if I don’t start getting some sleep pretty soon,

       I’ll be forced to move back upstairs out of sheer exhaustion. (goes upstairs)

      당연히 그러시겠지. 당장 잠이라도 못 자면 녹초가 돼서 억지로 위층으로 가야겠지.

(BREE waits till he moves out of sight, then goes to a cupboard and takes out a pair of pliers. She flips one corner of the mattress up, and cuts one of the wires in half. She bends both sides up so they are vertical. She tests how sharp it is with one finger, then pulls the mattress back on top of the sofa-bed, dusting her hands off and sighing with satisfaction.)

NARRATOR: Yes, Bree was afraid of many things. But if there was one thing she wasn’t afraid of,

                  it was a challenge.

                 , 브리는 두려운 게 많았습니다. 하지만 하나 두려워하지 않는 게 있다면 도전이었죠.
