Nazis in Korea?

'아니, 머리를 깎고 깊은 산 속에서 인간과 자연의 조화를 추구하는 스님들이?'
'Really? Those monks who shave their head and seek harmony between men and nature?'

한국에는 처음 와서 우연히 사찰순례 temple stay 에 참여하게 된  John 에겐 충격이었다.  관광지도에도 나치의 십자 기장이 눈에 들어오고, 서울 도심을 걷다가도 간혹 나치의 상징이 펄럭이는게 눈에 띈다.

산스크리트어로 스바스티카(swastika)라고 불리는 이 만(卍)자는 한국에서는 절 표시로 이용되고 있습니다. This sign is used in many Korean temples. 불교에서는 인생의 수레바퀴, 즉 윤회를 의미한다고 합니다. It represents the wheel of life, which is reincarnation. 그런데 점집에서도 이걸 자기들의 표시로 사용하고 있습니다. And many fortune tellers also use this sign. 당연히 이 사람들은 승려가 아닙니다. Of course they are not monks. 다만 자기들을 찾아오는 사람들한테 신뢰를 주고 자기들이 깊은 산속에서 수도를 해서 점쟁이가 됐다고 자랑하려고 쓰는 것입니다. They want to get trust and show themselves off to the people who visit them. The sign means they had meditated and practiced by themselves in the mountains.

서구인들에게는 이 만(卍)자가 생긴 모양이 나치의 십자기장으로 보일 수도 있으니 당연히 놀랄 만도 합니다. 그들 눈으로 보면 수많은 유태인들을 죽인 히틀러, 강제 수용소, 고문, 인종 개량법 같은 것들이 떠올랐겠지요. To the eye of western people, a Swastika is reminiscent of Hitler’s death machine – which was responsible for the death of millions and millions of people. Torture, concentration camps, eugenics, the extermination of the Jewish race and etc.…

 

하지만 자세히 보면 둘은 다릅니다. 불교에서 쓰는 만(卍)자는 반시계방향입니다. It is originally the counter-clockwise version. 하지만 나치의 십자기장은 시계방향입니다. 그리고 왼쪽으로 살짝 기울어져 있습니다. The Nazi Swastika, on the other hand, is the clockwise one, slightly inclined to the left.

불과 몇 년 전으로 기억하는데 한국에서 이 문양을 사용한 나치식 인테리어의 바 bars and night clubs using the Swastika 를 운영한 사람도 있었습니다. 서구인들이 뭐라 생각하든 독일군처럼 옷을 입기도 했었죠 dressed up like German soldiers without regard for what the West thinks of the symbol. 아무 생각 없이 자신만의 스타일이라고 여겼던 겁니다. They regarded it as a fashion statement and had no regard for the people killed in the concentration camps of WWII.

 

지금도 나치스타일로 인테리어를 하고 영업을 하는 지는 모르겠지만 너무나도 아찔한 makes me feel giddy 일입니다. 서구의 누군가가 일 제국주의를 찬양하는 바를 연다면 과연 우리나라 국민들은 어떤 기분일까요? If someone in the West opens a bar to praise the Japanese occupation of Korea, how does that make Koreans feel?
