That's the word from Jeffrey Hall, assistant professor of communication studies at the University of Kansas, whose research on various styles of flirting displayed by more than 5,100 dating adults was published in the fall in the journal Communication Quarterly.
켄사스 대학에서 커뮤니케이션학을 가르치는 제리 홀 교수가 언급한 내용이다. 교수의 5천 백 명 이상의 연애중인 성인들이 보여 준 다양한 스타일의 작업에 관한 연구가 가을 ‘Communication Quarterly’ 지에 실렸다.
"Knowing something about the way you communicate attraction says something about challenges you might have had in your past dating life," says Hall. "Hopefully, this awareness can help people avoid those mistakes and succeed in courtship."
“매력을 전달하는 방식에 대해 안다는 것이 과거에 가졌을지도 모르는 어려움에 대해 말해줍니다.” 홀 교수의 말이다. “잘하면 이런 자각이 사람들이 그런 실수를 피하고 구애에 성공하는데 도움이 됩니다.”
Participants answered a survey that analyzed their flirtation style, which was intended to gauge the way they perceive relationships and interact with love interests. Some of the more provocative questions:
참가자들은 자신의 작업방식을 분석하는 설문에 대답했다. 이 설문은 참가자들이 관계를 인식하고 상대와 상호작용하는 방식을 측정하려는 의도였다. 도발적인 질문 몇 개를 소개한다.
*love interest; a character in a film/movie or story who has a romantic role, often as the main character’s lover (영화·소설 등의 테마나 삽화(揷話)로서의) 연애; 그것을 하는 연기자
• I am good at showing my sexual interest. 나는 성적취향을 보이는 데 능숙하다.
• Men should make the first move. 남자가 먼저 행동을 취해야 한다.
• I am good at using body language to flirt. 나는 작업 걸 때 바디랭귀지에 능숙하다.
Using the responses, Hall was able to match participants with one of five dominant flirting styles: physical, traditional, polite, sincere and playful.
홀 교수는 응답들을 이용해서 참가자들을 다섯 가지 주요 작업스타일로 구분할 수 있었다. 육체적 스타일, 전통적 스타일, 품위 있는 스타일, 진솔한 스타일 그리고 장난스러운 스타일이다.
• Physical flirting: You're not shy about letting a potential partner know you've got the hots for him or her. People who scored high in this form of flirting often jump into relationships and boast more sexual chemistry and greater emotional connection to their partners.
*육체적 스타일: 상대에게 성적으로 끌린다는 것을 알리는 데 부끄러워하지 않는다. 이런 형태의 작업걸기에서 높은 점수를 받은 사람들은 서둘러 관계를 맺고 상대에게 더 많은 성적 교감과 정서적 교감을 보인다.
*get the hots for sb; be sexually attracted to sb
• Traditional flirting: Think old school. These introverted adherents believe guys should make the first move and women should wait patiently for them to do so. Not surprisingly, women in this category have a harder time catching guys' eyes.
*전통적 스타일; 전통 지지자들을 생각하라. 이런 지지자들은 남자가 먼저 행동을 취하고 여자는 남자들이 먼저 움직일 때까지 인내심을 가지고 기다려야 한다고 생각한다. 당연히 이 범주의 여성들은 남성의 눈을 사로잡는데 어려움을 겪는다.
*old school 모교, 보수파, 보수주의자/ 전통 지지자
*adherent; a person who supports a political party or set of ideas/ The movement is gaining more and more adherents. 그 운동은 점점 더 많은 지지자를 얻고 있다.
• Polite flirting: Mind your p's and q's, ladies and gents. Nonsexual communication and good manners are a must; flirting is discouraged.
*품위 있는 스타일: 신사 숙녀 여러분 말과 행동을 조심하라. 비(非) 성적대화와 예절은 필수; 작업 걸기는 단념하시라.
*Mind your Ps and Qs is an English expression meaning "mind your manners", "mind your language", "be on your best behaviour".
• Sincere flirting: It's all about communicating true interest in another person. Sexual chemistry is a must, though it takes a back seat to emotional connection.
*진솔한 스타일; 상대와 진정한 관심사를 나누는 것이 중요하다. 성적 교감은 필수, 하지만 정서적 교감보다 중요하지 않다.
*take a back seat; change to a less important role or function /The right to know takes a back seat to human dignity.“알 권리”가 인간의 존엄성보다 중요하지 않다./ He always takes a back seat when there is a struggle. 그는 늘 문제가 생기면 눈치만 보며 아무것도 안 하죠.
• Playful flirting: The province of the one-night standers, playful flirters like to flirt because it boosts their self-esteem.
*장난스러운 스타일: 하룻밤 상대를 찾는 사람들, 장난스럽게 작업을 거는 사람들은 작업을 통해 자긍심이 고양되므로 작업걸기를 좋아한다.
