Mike: Okay, right? 좋아. 응?
Jessica: Cute. 좋은데.
Mike: We are the future. Anything is possible......If you just believe.
우리가 미래입니다. 불가능은 없습니다… 믿음만 있다면.
Angela: Nice. 좋아.
Mike: Blah, blah, blah... 어쩌고 저쩌고…
Eric: Perfect. 완벽한데.
Mike: And got yourself a speech. 졸업생대표 연설준비 끝.
Jessica: No, this will be my speech. When I want everyone to throw diplomas at my head.
So...Thank you.
아니, 이렇게 연설하면 다들 졸업장을 내 머리에 던질 거야. 그러니… 퍽이나 고맙다.
Mike: You gotta embrace the cliches, Jess.
진부한 표현들을 잘 수용해야지, 제시카.

진부한 표현으로 나는 '하늘에 붕 떠 있는 기분'이다.

Eric: They have the bread and butter of all valedictorians.
진부한 표현이라도 모든 졸업생대표 연설의 기본은 갖췄네.
** bread and butter 버터를 바른 빵; 생계, 본업, 필요한 양식
: a bread and butter letter 라는 말은 맛있는 식사에 대한 편지 라는 뜻으로. 이 때 bread and butter 는 '식사'를 의미 합니다. 미국에서는 누구의 집에서 묵거나 식사를 하고 나서는 감사의 편지를 보내는 것이 예의라고 생각하지요. 보통 bread and butter letter에는 무사히 집으로 돌아왔다는 내용과 식사를 대접해 주어서 고맙다는 내용을 적습니다. 그리고 bread and butter라는 말이 생계수단이라는 뜻으로 쓰일 때에는 우리 말의 '밥줄'과 비슷한 말이 되지요. 즉
This is my bread and butter. 라고 하면 '이게 제 밥줄입니다.' 라는 뜻이 됩니다. 참고로 이런 말보다 좀 더 고상하게 표현하려면 This is how I make my living. (이것은 제 생계수단입니다.) 라고 하면 되겠습니다.

광고 수입은 신문사업의 기본이 된다.

그러니까 네가 졸업생대표가 못 되는 거야.

제시카는 진부한 표현 따위는 필요 없어. 연설은 대서사시가 될 거니까.
Jessica: Epic? It'll change lives.
대서사시? 인생을 바꿔 줄 거야.

하긴, 우리가 고등학교 졸업을 하면 몇 번이나 하겠어?
**After all 은 finally, at last, in the end 의 의미가 아닙니다. Contrary to what was expected
나 in spite of what was said before 의 의미로 이해하셔야 합니다.
/After all, we are friends.
뭐니뭐니 해도 우린 친구 사이니까.
/After all, the Palestinian problem is one of the root causes of the Middle East conflict.
결국 팔레스타인 문제는 중동 분쟁의 근본 원인의 하나이다.
Angela: A party? At your place? 파티? 너네 집에서?
Jessica: I've never seen your house. 너네 집 가 본 적이 없는데.
Eric: No one's ever seen their house. 쟤네들 집 가 본 사람 아무도 없어.
Edward: Another party, Alice? 또 파티야, 앨리스?
Alice: It'll be fun. 재밌을 거야.
Bella: Yeah. That's what you said last time. Hey, Angela.
그래. 지난 번에도 그럴 거라고 했지. 야, 앤젤라.
Angela: Yes. 응.
Bella: Do you need some help with those?
그거 하는 데 도움 필요해?
