Lizzie     Mr. Collins is the sort of man who makes you despair at the entire sex.

Wickham    Yours, I believe.

Lydia     Oh, Mr. Wickham, how perfect you are.

Kitty     He picked up my handkerchief, too.
            Did you drop yours
on purpose, Lizzie?

*Deliberately, intentionally/ He did it on purpose.

/cf.) accidentally on purpose. Seemingly accidentally but actually deliberately,
as in She stepped on his foot accidentally on purpose. (

Lydia    Mr. Wickham is a lieutenant.

Wickham    An enchanted lieutenant.

*Under the power of enchantment; possessed or exercised by enchanters

/ an enchanted garden (eg in a fairy story)

Jane    What are you up to, Liddy?

*up to; Occupied with, engaged in, as in What have you been up to lately? )This usage can mean "devising" or "scheming," as in We knew those two were up to something. It also appears in up to no good, meaning "occupied with or devising something harmful," as in I'm sure those kids are up to no good.

/cf.) What are you leading up to?

Lydia    We happened to be looking for some ribbon.

Kitty    White, for the ball.

Wickham    Shall we all look for some ribbon together?

Woman    Good afternoon, Mr. James.

Man  Good afternoon , Miss Lydia, Miss Bennet.

Wickham    I shan't even browse. I can't be trusted.

I have very poor taste in ribbons.

*have excellent taste in art/music

/ Just have a taste of this cheese!

/ have a taste for gambling

Lizzie    Only a man truly confident of himself would admit to that.

*admitadmit to――「사실을 인정하다」라는 뜻으로는 admit, admit to의 어느 쪽도 쓰이지만, 「잘못·죄를 인정하다」라는 뜻으로는 최근 admit to를 쓰게 되었다.

/George would never admit to being wrong. George

Wickham    No, it's true. And buckles.

When it comes to buckles, I'm lost.

*We would be totally lost without your help.

/They spoke so quickly I just got lost.

/Henry is lost.

Lizzie    Dear, oh, dear. You must be the shame of the regiment.

Wickham    The laughing stock.

*A laughing stock is a phrase used to describe a thing which has become the object of ridicule. The phrase is often hyphenated (laughing-stock) and is thought to originate from the time where stocks were used to punish and humiliate petty criminals.

/ His attempts at DIY made him the laughing-stock of the neighbourhood.

/Stocks: a wooden instrument of punishment on a post with holes for the neck and

hands; offenders were locked in and so exposed to public scorn.

Lizzie    What do your superiors do with you?

/ We were in a hurry so we had to make do with a quick snack.

Wickham    Ignore me. I'm of next to no importance, so it's easily done.

Wickham    Allow me to oblige.

*To do a service or favor / We'd be happy to oblige.

/cf.) Don't feel obliged to stay if you're busy.

/ You are not obliged to answer these questions, but it would help us if you did.

Lizzie    No, Mr. Wickham, please...

Wickham    I insist.

*Nope. This is on me. I insist.
