어느 솔로의 새해 전야 보내는 법

 A single guy’s New Year’s Eve

 

새해전야를 혼자 보낸다는 생각은 버리자.

특별한 파티에 간다고 생각하자.

Don’t think of it as spending New Year’s Eve alone;

think of it as going to the most exclusive party.

 

우선 마실 술을 충분히 사야겠다.

Need to get plenty of booze.  

 

디브이디 대여점 가서 볼 영화도 좀 골라야겠다.

And rent some DVDs at video store.  

 

집에 도착하자 마자 소주 한 병을 비운다.

올해도 솔로라는 실망감을 달래야 하니까.

Upon returning home, empty a bottle of Soju,

to alleviate the crushing disappointment of being alone again.

 

너무 조용하다.

Too quiet.

빈 커피캔을 동전으로 채운다.

Fill empty coffee cans with handfuls of coins.

마구 흔든다. 흠, 좀 시끄러운 게 파티하는 것 같다.

Shake violently. Now it seems there’s a noisy party going on here.

 

늘 먹던 단출한 저녁은 생략하자.

Skip the usual ‘simple dinner’.

족발도 시키고, 치킨도 시키자. 마치 사람들이 더 올 것처럼.

Order pork hocks and chicken like you’re expecting guests.

배달하는 친구한테 초라한 모습 보이면 안 된다.

You don’t want to show your pitying look to delivery boy.

 

최근에 나한테 중요하다고 생각하는 사람들에게 술김에 전화를 하자.

뭐 그냥 새해 복 많이 받으라는 전화라고 가장하는 거다.

Call your most recent significant others pot-valiantly,

under the guise of “just wishing you a happy new year.”

 

또 소주 한 병을 비운다.

Another bottle of Soju.

 

자정이 되기 전에 소파에 눕는다.

하지만 이내 인사불성이다. 제야의 종소리도 놓친다.

Lie down on the couch shortly before midnight and promptly pass out,

missing the big moment of the bell ringing ceremony.

 

 

새벽 4시, 두통과 함께 잠에서 깬다. 입안이 시궁창이다.

비틀거리며 욕실로 향한다.

Wake up at 4 am with a throbbing headache

and a horrible taste in your mouth.

Stumble to the bathroom.
