Meredith is sitting with another young blonde female intern
in a small hospital waiting area adjacent to some stairs.
MEREDITH: Look, I’m sure you’re very nice.
But I’m very particular about who lives in my house.
And you’re just not right.
*She is particular[choosy] about who she dates.
He is not particular[fastidious] about what he eats. or He is an omnivorous
glutton.
INTERN #1: Why? … Look, I’m quiet. No loud music. No parties.
MEREDITH: Where were you when the ‘Challenger’ exploded?
*The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986.
INTERN #1: The what? 챌…
MEREDITH: The space shuttle. ‘Challenger.’
INTERN #1: Uh. I think I was in kindergarten.
MEREDITH: Exactly. No. 그 봐요.
*For many people, the challenger disaster was a defining moment in their history.
Maybe Meredith thinks she is too young to share the memories
of the space shuttle Challenger disaster.
IZZIE: Why do you put up posters for roommates if you don’t want roommates?
MEREDITH: I do want roommates.
We’re together 100 hours a week; you want to live together too?
Cristina walks up to them and sees the coffee.
CRISTINA (to Meredith): Oh, I see you bring bribes now, huh?
Meredith walks over to a nurse’s station
where Dr. Bailey is standing going over some charts.
The others follow her.
DR. BAILEY: George, you’re running the code team. Meredith, take the trauma pager.
Cristina, deliver the weekend labs to the patients. Izzie, you’re on sutures.
*The use of rapid response teams is a relatively new approach for decreasing or eliminating codes in acute care hospitals. Based on the principles of a code team for cardiac and/or respiratory arrest in non—critical care units, the rapid response teams have specially trained nursing, respiratory, and medical personnel to respond to calls from general care units to assess and manage decompensating or rapidly changing patients before their conditions escalate to a full code situation.
Bailey starts walking off up some open stairs. Meredith follows holding the latte.
MEREDITH: Dr. Bailey, I was hoping to assist you in the O.R today,
[Bailey stops walking and turns around]
Maybe, do a minor procedure? I think I’m ready.
[She holds up the tray with the latte] Mocha latte?
Bailey is about to speak before she is interrupted
by the others who have heard everything.
CRISTINA: If she gets to cut, I want to cut, too.
IZZIE: Yeah, me too.
GEORGE: I wouldn’t mind another shot. I mean, if everybody else is…
DR. BAILEY: Stop talking. Every intern wants to perform their first surgery.
That’s not your job. Do you know what your job is?
To make your resident happy. Do I look happy?
No. Why? Because my interns are whiny.
You know what will make me look happy?
Having the code team staffed, having the trauma pages answered,
having the weekend labs delivered and having someone down in the pit
doing the sutures!
GEORGE: My mom irons my scrubs. I have to get out of there.
*pl. scrubs. The articles of clothing that make up a scrub suit.
MEREDITH (to Cristina): It’s not a bribe. (to George) I don’t think it’s a good idea.
GEORGE: Look, I can put down last, first, and deposit…
* Pay a deposit, as in We put down $2,000 for the car.
/ put down a deposit on a computer
CRISTINA (interrupts): It’s totally a bribe.
IZZIE: I can cook. And I’m an obsessive cleaner.
MEREDITH: No. I just want two total strangers who I don’t have to talk to or be nice to.
And it’s not a bribe. It’s a mocha latte.
She looks at the mocha latte and grabs it out of the tray
and starts walking off up the stairs.
DR. BAILEY: No one holds a scalpel till I’m so happy,
I’m Mary freaking Poppins.
*Mary Poppins is a series of children's books written by P.L. Travers and originally illustrated by Mary Shepard. The books centre on a mysterious, vain and acerbic magical English nanny, Mary Poppins. She is blown by the East wind to Number Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane, London and into the Banks' household to care for their children. Encounters with chimney sweeps, shopkeepers and various adventures follow until Mary Poppins abruptly leaves, i.e., 'pops-out'.
CRISTINA (to Meredith): Mocha latte, my ass.
* A way of expressing disbelief.
DR. BAILEY (yells from upstairs): Why’re you all standing there? Move!
