Flashback to the year 1928.
A young Jung-tae, working as a rickshaw driver,
intervenes when he sees a group of men beating up a young girl.
신정태: 괜찮냐? Are you okay?
[The girl he just saved shows her gratitude by slapping him across the cheek]
데쿠치 가야: 방해만 없었으면 저 자식 눈에 박았어.
If you didn’t interfere, I would have shoved this into his eye.
신정태: 방해? 내가? Interfere? Me?
데쿠치 가야: 되로 주면 말로 오는 놈들이야.
If you beat them, the whole gang would show up.

네가 준거 내가 받게 생겼어.

다음달까지 그의 키가 얼마나 더 자라게 될지 두고 봅시다!
그러니까 유세 떨 생각 마.
So don’t be so high-hatted.
놔! 놓으라고! Let go! Leave it!
[Jung-tae smooths some salve on her bleeding hand and wraps it up]
신정태: 가만히 있어봐. Stay still.
바퀴 끌다 보면 쏠리고 찢기는 거 다반사야.
When you pull a carriage all day long,
these kinds of injuries happen all the time.
이게 상처는 남아도 덧나는 건 잡아 주더라.
That won’t do much for the scar,
but it will prevent the wound from taking a bad turn.
유세 떨려는 거 아니니까 그냥 있어.
I’m not trying to show off, so stay still.
열차 들어오면 내가 역전에 있다는 뜻이야.
When the train arrives, that means I’m at the station.
뭐 일 생기면 찾아와.
If something happens, come and look for me.
네 말대로 내가 퍼 질렀으니까 내가 치울게.
Like what you said, since I caused this mass, I’ll clean up the mess.
