The queen dowager (Kim Young-ae) tells a story to one of her vassals, Lord Yoon Dae-hyung.

She is the mother to King Seongjo, the current (and fictional) king.

대왕대비 윤씨: 태초에, In the beginning,

하늘에는 태양이 둘, there were two suns in the sky,

달 또한 둘이었다 합니다. and there were two moons.

허니, 낮은 너무 뜨겁고, Thus, the days were extremely hot,

밤은 너무 차가울 수밖에. and the nights too cold.

천지만물이 혼란에 빠지고, All of creation was thrown into chaos,

만백성이 도탄에 빠진 그때, and all the people in misery.

불세출의 영웅이 나타나, Then a hero appeared,

해와 달 하나씩을 활을 쏘아 떨어뜨리니

and used arrows to shoot down one sun and one moon.

그제서야 세상은 화평해졌다고 합니다.

Only then was there peace in the world.

그렇지요, 난세에는 영웅이 필요한 법이지요.

Yes, we need a hero in these troubled times.

아니 그렇습니까, 조카님?  Isn’t that right, nephew?

다른 배를 빌려 태어난 아우도 혈육이라고,

Even those born from another womb

are considered a part of one’s own bloodline,

우리 추상이 의성군의 기를 너무 살리셨어요.

His Majesty has made Prince Ui-seong so high-spirited.

*There's no need to make me look small in front of everybody!

모든 사람들 앞에서 나를 기죽일 필요는 없잖아!

/Don't be too downhearted; things will get better.

너무 기죽지마. 사정이 나아질 거야.

그러니 의성군을 왕제라 생각하는 사특한 무리들이 생겨나는 겝니다.  

That’s why a tricky group has appeared with Prince Ui-seong as its leader.

허니 어쩌겠습니까?  So, what should we do?

영웅이 나타나주기를 넋 놓고 기다릴 수 만은 없지 않습니까?

We can’t just sit and wait for a hero to appear, right?

With all due respect, I’m slow-witted

so I’m unable to totally understand Queen Dowager’s meaning.

 

대왕대비 윤씨: 영웅이 되세요. Please become a hero.

충신이 되세요. Become a loyal subject.

차마 나서지 못하는 성심을 헤아려

His Majesty has some qualms so he can’t come forward.

*Animals eat one another without qualm. 동물은 거리낌없이 서로 잡아먹는다.

/have no qualms about stealing 도둑질을 하고도 아무렇지 않다

공신이 돼 보세요.

So become a hero by doing that yourself.

하늘의 태양은 하나. There should be only one sun in the sky.

태전에 용상 또한 하나. There can only be one throne.

의성군은 존재자체만으로도 금상의 옥좌를 위협하니

The existence of Prince Ui-Seong  

threatens whether His Majesty can secure the throne properly.

반드시 제거 되어야만 하는 태양입니다.

So you must make him disappear.
