Even though I reject most of the religious things, I can't help but feeling for
all those people that come here lost or in pain, guilt, looking for some kind of
answers. It fascinates me how a single place can join so much pain and
happiness for so many generations.
며칠 전 부다페스트에서 할머니하고 비슷한 오래 된 교회에 갔어요. 비록 종교적인 것 대부분을 거부하지만, 길을 잃거나, 고통을 겪거나, 죄인의 심정으로 여기 와서 답을 구하는 사람들의 심정을 이해 할 수 밖에 없어요. 한 장소가 그 많은 고통과 행복을 수 많은 세대에 걸쳐 아우를 수 있다는 게 날 매료시켜요.

Selene Yeah. I think it’s because I always... I always have this strange feeling
that I am this very old woman laying down about to die. You know,
that my life is just her memories, or something.

Jesse That's so wild. I mean, I always think that I'm still this 13 year old boy,
y'know who just doesn't really know how to be an adult, pretending to live my life,
taking notes for when I'll really have to do it. Kind of like I'm in a dress rehearsal
for a Junior High play.

17세기 영국의 급진적 청교도 신비주의에서 출발하였으며 신자들이 자기 신앙을 육체의

Jesse Well, I went to this Quaker wedding once, and it was fantastic.
What they do is the couple comes in and they kneel down in front of
the whole congregation, and they just stare at each other, and nobody says
a word unless they feel that God moves them to speak, or say something.
And then after an hour or so, of just, uh, staring at each other, they're married.
한 번은 퀘이커교 결혼식에 갔어요. 환상적이었죠. 그 사람들이 하는 거라고는
부부가 입장하고, 사람들 앞에 무릎 꿇고 앉아서 그냥 서로를 쳐다보는
것뿐이에요. 아무도 신이 두 사람을 말하게 할 때까지 한 마디도 하지 않아요.
그러고는 그렇게 서로 쳐다보면서 한 시간 여가 지나고,
둘은 부부가 되는 거에요.
Selene That's beautiful. I like that. 아름답네요. 맘에 들어요.
Jesse This is a horrible story. 끔찍한 얘기에요.
Selene What? 뭐가요?
Jesse It’s not the appropriate place to tell it, but...

Jesse Well, I was driving around with this buddy of mine, he was a big atheist,
and we came to a stop, next to this homeless guy. And my buddy takes out
a 100 dollar bill, and leans out the window, and he says, 'do you believe in God?'
And the guy looks at, uh, he looks at my friend, and he looks at the money,
he says, uh, 'Yes, I do.' My friend says, 'Wrong answer.', and we drove away.
친구랑 차를 타고 가고 있었어요, 이 친구 대단한 무신론자에요, 한 노숙자 앞에
차를 멈추는 거에요. 100 달러 지폐를 꺼내서 창 밖으로 내밀더니 묻는 겁니다,
‘신을 믿으세요?’ 그 사람이 친구를 보고, 또 돈을 쳐다 보더니, ‘네, 믿습니다.’
라는 거에요. 친구 왈, ‘ 대답이 틀렸어요.’ 그리고는 가버렸죠.
*atheist 신의 존재를 부정하는 사람. agnostic 신·천지 창조 등을 불가지라고 보고 모든
교리를 안 믿는 사람. skeptic 일반에게 인정된 교리나 신조에 회의를 품고 비판하는 사람
Selene That's mean, no? 너무 심하다. 안 그래요?
Jesse Yeah, uh, it’s, uh… 그래요…
