*a cause, the cause――「…의 주의·목적을 위하여」의 뜻으로는 정관사를 붙인 뒤에 동격의 of를 취한다. 단, 형용사에 수식되어 단독으로 쓰이는 경우는 부정관사를 취하는 경우도 있다: fight for a great cause / work in a common cause.
;위의 예와 같이 the cause of 앞에 놓이는 전치사는 in이나 for가 보통. 단, serve, service, benefit 따위가 앞에 있는 경우에는 to가 온다: serve to the cause of freedom.
