Nick (V.O.):  Stocks reached record peaks, and Wall Street boomed in steady golden roar.

                  The parties were bigger. The shows were broader. The buildings were higher.

                  The morals were looser, and the ban on alcohol had backfired, making the

                  liquor cheaper. Wall Street was luring the young and ambitious, and I was

                  one of them. I rented a house twenty miles from the city on Long Island. I lived

                  in West Egg, in a forgotten groundskeeper's cottage, squeezed among the

                  mansions of the newly rich. To get started, I bought a dozen volumes on credit,

                  banking and investment, all new to me.

                   주식은 연일 상한가를 기록하고, 월 스트리트는 계속해서 황금빛 포효를 질러댔습니다. 파티는 더 성대해지고, 쇼는 더 대담해졌지요. 빌딩은 높아간 가고 도덕은 느슨해졌습니다. 술 금지는 역효과만 낳았습니다, 술 가격이 더 싸진 겁니다. 월 스트리트는 젊고 야망에 찬 이들을 유혹했습니다. 저도 그들 중 하나였죠. 전 뉴욕에서 20마일 떨어진 롱아일랜드에 집을 구했습니다. 웨스트에그에 살았죠.  신흥부자들의 저택 사이를 비집고 자리 잡은 관리인의 작은 별장에서 말입니다. 우선, 신용거래, 은행업무와 투자에 관한 책을 열 권 넘게 샀습니다, 다 저에겐 새로웠죠.

Nick:  Well, boys, nothing is a 100%. Though I wouldn't go investing every penny.
