박지형: 몰랐어. I didn’t know.

 

이서연: 그러면서 가끔가다 일년에 두 번, 세 번 꼭 한밤중에 전화했었어?

And you still called twice or three times a year at night?

 

박지형: 그래. Yeah.

 

이서연: 왜? Why?

 

박지형: 글쎄. 그냥 한번씩 이 자식 잘하고 있나, 어떻게 하고 있나 궁금했었어.

I don’t know, I just wondered what you were doing, how you were doing.

 

이서연: 왜? 왜 내가 궁금했는데?

박지형: 드문드문 네 생각이 났다니까.

박지형: 그 왜를 몰랐다니까, 자식아.

I didn’t know why, fool.

뭔지 모르게 신경 쓰이는 친구 여동생, 그렇게 생각했던 것 같아.

I guess I thought it was because you were my friend’s cousin that I cared about.

 

이서연: 왜 신경이 쓰였는데?

Why did you care?

내가 안되 보여서?

Because you felt bad about me?

내가 불쌍해서?

Because you pitied me?

/She played around with the scumbag. 그녀는 그 놈팡이하고 놀아났다.

건드린단 생각은 안 해봤어?

Didn’t you think of doing that?

 

박지형: 너 반가워도 좋아도 않으면서 너무 별일 아닌 것처럼 굴었잖아.

You acted like you didn’t like to receive the call or something.

‘잘 지내니?’ ‘잘 지내요.’ 그 다음엔 넌 꼭 ‘왜요?’ 라고 했어.

‘How are you?’ ‘Good. ‘ And then you would always say, ‘Why?’

군대에서 전화해도 그러더니,

Even when I called from army, you asked ‘Why?’

미국에서 건 전화에도 두 마디째는 반드시 ‘왜요?’

When I called from America, you asked ‘Why?’

‘왜요?’ 라니, 그건 열 두 개 바리케이드 같았어, 이 자식아.

What do you mean ‘Why?’, Those words were like barricades against me.
